I found this cool site, One Day, One Job, that profiles a different job/company every day. Over the weekend they featured Heldref Publications, a nonprofit book publisher in Washington, D.C. The profile tells about the history and workings of the company, mentions a job opening for a proofreader, and tells you how to apply directly to a real person there.
I've put One Day, One Job on my feeds to see what other jobs and companies will come up (although they are not always publishing jobs). I also advise you to look through the list of past posts for more company profiles, including Random House, Amazon.com, and Better World Books.
And this week they announced a new sister site called One Day, One Internship, which does the same thing with a different internship each day.

How likely is it that someone with no proofreading experience would be able to get a job like this? The ad mentions you must "know standard copyediting symbols, and have excellent knowledge of American Psychological Association and Chicago styles. MLA and AMA a plus."
I worked as a staff writer for a small newspaper right out of college, but have no experience with copyediting symbols or the Chicago styles.

In general, proofreader jobs are considered entry-level, so they are kind of reaching for the moon by expecting their new proofreader to have mastered up to four different stylebooks! My advice to you, if you want to apply for this job, is to study up on the proofreading symbols in the Chicago Manual of Style (see here: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_proof.html). Also, buy a copy of that book and the APA style guide and just soak up as much as you can from them. The way this company will probably try to determine whether you know these style guides is by giving you a proofreading test. So if you can learn the styles on your own, it won't matter if you don't have formal experience using them (although experience would certainly help you master them). The main point is to demonstrate that you have good attention to tiny details and the ability to learn and conform to a style guide.
I think your newspaper job could help you get your foot in the door. But you'll have to do well on the test to have a shot at the job.

The number of jobs given is also guite big as compared to other sites. Jobs are included from most of the fortune 500 companies.
So go to the side and rend your resume fast..
When I was jobless and searching for job on every second site only this site helped me to find a Job. So do not come under influence of people who say that its a scam. Just go through it once and you will feel the difference.
